REDUCING WORLD HUNGER
When most people think of bacteria, they think they are bad--and they often are. However, in 2014, three high school students from Ireland found a new, good way to use bacteria to help grow more food. The three girls-Ciara Judge, Émer Hickey, and Sophie Healy Thow--are interested in how science can help feed the Earth's growing population.
One day, Hickey's mother was in her garden, and noticed something on the roots of her pea plants. The girls learned that pea plants have lumps on their roots containing a kind of bacteria called Diazotroph. The Diazotroph bacteria help the peas grow faster. So, the girls decided to test it with other kinds of plants.
As an experiment, they added the bacteria to barley seeds. They repeated the experiment many times, and found the plants started growing in half as much time, and produced up to 30% more food than normal plants.
The girls are going to continue their research to see if the bacteria can also help other kinds of food plants. They say they take "a great interest in how the world works and how we can help those around us."

Thu: How was your travel to Alaska, Ron?
Ron: It was fantastic. Although it was very cold, I did many interesting activities like ice fishing or sleeping in a big igloo.
Thu: Wow! How did you move there?
Ron: I rode a dogsled pulled by powerful dogs on the snow and through the forests. It was like getting lost in a marvelous snow kingdom.
Thu: Sounds cool. I’m a dog lover, so I really want to try travelling with those native dogs. Did you see any bears?
Ron: No, I didn’t. Because I went there in October when all bears often sleep.
Thu: What a pity!
Ron: Yes, I know. But I had a great chance to see the northern lights. They were too beautiful to describe in words.
Thu: Awesome! I’m sure Alaska will be on the list of my future destinations.
