Exercise 5. Read the following and decide if the following sentences are True or False. The outbreak of the Covid-19 has negatively affected fashion industries in developing countries. Like other Asian countries, Viet Nam is under a lot of pressure to thrive the fashion industry by carrying out reforms after the pandemic. Many people realize that fast fashion trends are not environmentally friendly, and they have turned to garments that cause no harm to the environment.
The concept of sustainable fashion in Viet Nam is almost too new as there are a few organizations working on recycling and restoration of old clothes. The country’s economic development has led to the trend that customers are inclined to choose cheap and mass-produced clothing items but quickly reject them. As a result, every year tons of clothes are thrown away in Viet Nam.
It is hoped that the situation will change soon. Some fashion designers begin to make clothes from durable materials such as natural cotton, bamboo and recycled polyester. These materials do not wear out easily and are strong enough for consumers to use over a long period of time. Moreover, local consumers, especially the youth, are willing to pay more for sustainable goods. Nearly 70% of surveyed consumers said that they chose to use eco-friendly clothing products which could save water and electricity.

Exercise 6. Choose the word (A, B, C or D) that best fits each blank space in the following passage. Fast fashion is the mass production of clothes at a low cost. Now, environmentalists are getting more concerned about the negative effects that the fast fashion business model is having on the environment. Many of the clothes end (27) ______ in landfills and are not recycled. In the past, people went to stores, tried clothes on and thought carefully before they bought them. Today, people order cheap clothes on the Internet. (28) ______ they don’t like what they have ordered, they will send them back or throw away the unwanted items. This causes a
throwaway society. Another negative impact is caused by the chemicals used to make the clothes. These chemicals including flame retardants, lead, chlorine bleach not only cause health (29) ______ for people working in clothes factories (asthma, shortness of breath or tightness in the chest), but also pollute the air and water when they are discharged without being (30) ______ treated.

Exercise 5. Read the following and decide if the following sentences are True or False. It is a common misconception that those who take part in extreme sports or look for an “adrenaline rush” are most likely to be young and male. This way of thinking makes extreme sports become viewed in a way that is inaccessible to “normal people”. In fact, participation in extreme activities is beneficial to humans. Participants from all sorts of extreme sports broaden their extraordinary sensory experience that is not usually available in everyday life. This is because their ability to see, here and feel are all heightened during their participation. For example, base jumpers often talk about an enhanced capacity to see every nook and cranny, shapes and sizes of the rock even though they are travelling at 200 mph. What’s more, there is clear evidence that most sensation-seekers develop positive relationships with the natural world and pro-environmental behaviors. During their participation in extreme sports, participants feel like they are merging with the environment which invariably turns into a feeling of being profoundly part of nature. This may be one reason why so many extreme sports athletes spend a great deal of energy and time protecting the natural environment and working hard to raise public awareness of its importance.
