Mùa hè năm 2000, Hội Khuyến học Việt Nam bắt đầu chiến dịch xóa nạn mù chữ. Trong chiến dịch, 600 học sinh dân tộc thiểu số từ các vùng cao phía bắc được yêu cầu cung cấp kỹ năng đọc và viết cho 1.200 người mù chữ sống ở các làng quê của họ. Năm 2001, tám trăm tình nguyện viên. học sinh tham gia chiến dịch. Số người nhận các bài học đọc và viết đạt 4.623. Đây là một biện pháp hữu hiệu giúp đồng bào vùng sâu, vùng xa biết đọc, biết viết. Cuộc chiến chống nạn mù chữ tiếp tục diễn ra vào mùa hè năm 2002. Thời gian này, Hội Khuyến học Việt Nam quyết định mở rộng hoạt động ra các tỉnh miền núi miền Trung. Hiện nay, số người mù chữ ở vùng sâu, vùng xa đang giảm dần. Hy vọng rằng nạn mù chữ sẽ sớm được xóa bỏ ở đất nước chúng ta khi ngày càng có nhiều người tham gia vào cuộc đấu tranh chống lại nạn mù chữ.
